King of the Hill
The “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Racing Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared “King of the Hill” for that year.
Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2023 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 1-4 boats in each class of the Racing Division based on average class size for the 2023 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Marylyn Ritchie trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Racing Division) to result in 21 invited boats.
The winner will be awarded the King of the Hill trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club. The King of the Hill trophy was a pre-existing CYC trophy that was re-dedicated to this new race in 2002. Joan Hill was the long-time Chair for the Sunset Series and a regular volunteer for CYC races. In 2003, Joanie died as a result of breast cancer and since then this race has served as a memorial to her dedication and hard work in running the Sunset Series for many years.
Sunset Series Cruising Championship
New in 2021, the Sunset Series Cruising Championship is an end-of-the-season race run the same evening as King of the Hill in which the “best of the best” from each of the classes in the Cruising Division are invited to compete in this inverted-start race. This race will pit the best sailors in each class against each other, with the boat crossing the finish line first declared the “Sunset Series Cruising Champion” for that year.
Entry to this race is limited to those boats that receive an invitation. Invitations will be issued based on the final results of the 2023 Sunset Series, which ends the preceding Wednesday. Invitations will go to the top 2-4 boats in each class of the Cruising Division based on average class size for the 2023 Sunset Series. Additional boats will then be invited based on end-of-the-season standings for the Millard Rosing trophy (awarded to the boat with the best overall record in the Cruising Division) to result in 8 invited boats.
The winner will be awarded the Sunset Series Cruising Championship Trophy which will remain on display at California Yacht Club.
